Speaker John Boehner wants the funds that would have been used by the Justice Department to defend the Defense of Marriage Act cut from the DOJ budget. He doesn't want that money to be saved, in the spirit of budget cutting. He wants it to be spent by the House in taking up the defense of DOMA, since the Justice Department has decided to abandon the effort.
"Obviously, DOJ's decision results in DOJ no longer needing the funds it would have otherwise expended defending the constitutionality of DOMA," Boehner wrote in a letter to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). "It is my intent that those funds be diverted to the House for reimbursement of any costs incurred by and associated with the House, and not DOJ, defending DOMA."It was not immediately clear how Boehner would determine the amount of money that DOJ would have spend on defending DOMA. A Boehner spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for clarification on how that amount would be determined....
"I would welcome your joining me in support of redirecting those resources from the DOJ to the House that would otherwise have been necessary expenses on the Attorney General to defend this federal statute," Boehner wrote to Pelosi.
Yeah, I'm sure Pelosi is going to jump right on board there. The GOP is intent on continuing to foment the culture wars, with their ongoing war on women and with this fight. Their hearing last week, which Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) justified by saying that the founding fathers didn't want gay marriage, is proof that they're going to push the DOMA issue as far as they can.
Because they're very serious about the deficit and creating jobs.
